And because every style–AP, MLA, APA, etc.–changes, that fact alone should make it clear that these styles are suggestions, not rules. In addition, the styles often are in conflict so, again, it should be clear that there are few strict rules. Be consistent and use common sense and you will be just fine.

Is there a rule for when one should use an apostrophe such as: Associated Press’ rules vs. The Associated Press Stylebook where one is not used.

Example: The Cville Dems’ December meeting or The Cville Dems December meeting?

I think when there’s a compound proper name there are some rules about when apostrophe is used, but cannot find anything written.
