These women are leading the way with smart, bold marketing strategies.

Women dominate the field of marketing. That means female leaders wield incredible power in shaping how customers – and even the wider culture – view the products and services their organizations offer.

That doesn’t mean the road has always been easy for women in the industry. There are still glass ceilings to break, old prejudices to overcome and the challenge of balancing family and career – all while being exceptional practitioners of their craft.

The 2023 winners of PR Daily’s Top Women in Marketing have overcome these challenges with skill, determination and grace. The 2024 honorees will be no exception – will you be among them? Your last chance to enter is March 22, 2024.

While we wait to celebrate this year’s crop of marvelous marketers, let’s take a year back at just a handful of last year’s winners to see what landed them on the awards list.

Lainey Johnson, EY Americas head of brand and paid media

Lainey Johnson manages marketing investments exceeding $30 million annually and that incorporate creative ideas into the marketing mix, including “Real Time Insights,” a series of 90-second news-segment-style episodes. These episodes, hosted by CNBC’s Caroline Woods from an EY-branded set at CNBC’s Headquarters, feature EY thought leaders and strategic partners. The series integrates into news programming, demonstrating EY’s expertise while boosting brand consideration.

Additionally, Johnson spearheads “Leadership in Action,” a master class series in collaboration with the Wall Street Journal, featuring prominent CEOs discussing decisive moments in their companies. The series not only resonates strongly with EY’s target audience but also demonstrates impressive engagement statistics, with users spending over four times above benchmark engaging with the content.

Johnson also introduced “Real Time Business – Financial Services Edition” in partnership with Reuters, aiming to humanize EY and shed light on the financial services industry. The program featured 10 digital videos and audio cut-downs that garnered exceptional engagement, surpassing Reuters’ overall benchmarks with 544K LinkedIn video views and 12.4M audio listens.

Her commitment to creating engaging content that serves audiences as much as it serves the brand earned her place among the Top Women in Marketing 2024.

Barrie Gruner, executive vice president of Hulu marketing and publicity

Under Barrie Gruner’s leadership, Hulu’s have achieved remarkable success, setting new records in the streaming industry.

One standout example of Gruner’s expertise is her work with the critically acclaimed “Only Murders in the Building.” Leveraging innovative tactics like TikTok Branded Effect, Digital Ambient Rooms and a pop-up museum activation, Gruner’s team celebrated the series and deepened fan engagement, resulting in “Only Murders in the Building” becoming the most-watched comedy in Hulu’s history.

The launch of “The Kardashians” on Hulu also witnessed success thanks to Gruner’s robust marketing and social campaigns, including social media units, custom content, extensive out-of-home advertising, immersive press events, and influencer experiences. @KardashiansHulu gained one million followers on Twitter in just 48 hours, achieving the largest social footprint of any Hulu launch.

For the promotion of “The Handmaid’s Tale” season five, Gruner’s team made history by becoming TikTok’s first advertiser in North America to run a paid ad using the newly launched Story Selection Ad, leading to a 268% increase in average engagement.

Gruner’s commitment to new technology and storytelling set her apart among her peers.

Marissa Beck Viola, VP of global brand experience for M&M’s Ecosystem

Marissa Beck Viola’s bold approach to omni-channel storytelling and her dedication to creating new connection points for the next generations of consumers have positioned her at the forefront of the industry.

M&M’S introduced the world to Purple, a peanut-shaped female spokescandy who celebrated uniqueness and purpose. Beck Viola and her team executed a comprehensive digital and earned media relations campaign, anchored by engaging video content. Purple’s introduction generated more than 120 million social media impressions within the first 24 hours, along with over 9 billion global media impressions. This initiative led to double-digit sales growth year-over-year and cemented M&M’S as Gen Z’s favorite CPG brand, as recognized by Morning Consult.

Next, Snickers continued its successful Rookie Mistake of the Year campaign, emphasizing the brand’s core message: “You’re not you when you’re hungry.” This integrated program spanned the NFL season, featuring rookie hunger-related mistakes, and engaged consumers through TV, online video, social media and in-store activations. The campaign achieved a nearly 50% increase in social media entries, garnered over 1.5 billion earned media impressions, and resulted in more than 24,000 QR code scans on packaging, ultimately boosting sales for the brand.

Lastly, Skittles undertook a significant challenge by bringing back its lime flavor after a nine-year hiatus. Beck Viola orchestrated an apology tour that began with a live press conference and continued across various platforms, including Twitter, Times Square billboards and a post listing every consumer who had complained. The campaign generated over 5 million streaming minutes on Twitch, a 1,000% increase in searches for Lime SKITTLES, 27 million media impressions, and double-digit sales growth. This campaign earned two Gold Cannes Lions awards.

Beck Viola’s commitment to making a big splash while keeping customers front-and-center cemented her place as one of the Top Women in Marketing 2023.

Abbie Griffith, Edelman managing director & US head of operations, Health

Abbie Griffith pioneers Black female leadership and helps people across the agency fulfill their own dreams of making it in the field.

In the last year, Griffith spearheaded the transition of Edelman’s U.S. Health sector away from working in siloed, centralized markets to a “One Edelman” approach, where teams pull in specialists and colleagues from across the country to deliver the best work possible. Under this model, Griffith served as a source and connector of more than 375 colleagues across the sector.

When preparing for the launch of new long-acting monoclonal antibody Evusheld, AstraZeneca engaged Edelman to develop a fully integrated, multimillion-dollar campaign to drive adoption and awareness of its importance in the fight again against COVID-19. The campaign, “Up The Antibodies,” was a multipronged effort involving celebrities, influencers, content and policymaker engagement. The face of the campaign was Academy Award-winning actor Jeff Bridges.

Griffith is also a founding member of GRIOT, Edelman’s employee resource group for Black employees, as well as a founding and steering committee member of the Edelman Global Culture Committee, which ensures the company’s core values are reflected in all client programs and employees’ daily interactions.

Her work as a connector and advocate have placed her firmly among the Top Women in Marketing.

A roundup of career advice from the incoming class of Top Women.

The Top Women in Communications Awards highlights a tremendous group of communications leaders who consistently influence and inspire everyone around them. Honorees include community givers, crisis navigators, DE&I champions, mentors, trailblazers, visionaries, rising stars and many more.

And not to be left out, we’re welcoming a new class of Hall of Fame inductees. This year includes Susan Donlan, chief communications officer at KeyCorp, Kathy Krenger, chief communications officer at Kraft Heinz, and Marian Salzman, senior vice president of global communications at Philip Morris International.

Donlan shared what she wishes she’d known earlier in her career: “You know, at the beginning of my career, I was always in a big hurry. Always looking at what came next. And now I really try to slow down and enjoy just being in the moment and taking my time.”

In anticipation of this year’s celebration, happening Feb. 29 in New York City, we offered honorees a chance to share either their best piece of advice for rising comms professionals or something they wished they’d known earlier in their career. Below are just a handful of what this year’s class had to say.

Jennifer Hines, chief communications officer at Tyler Independent School District, is an award-winning news anchor with 20 years of media experience across Texas. She joined the academic communications industry in 2019, right before schools across the country were plunged into uncertainty from the COVID-19 pandemic. Hines oversaw the district’s two flagship high schools changing their names; crafting Return to Learn guidelines during the pandemic with messaging for parents, staff, the community and media; boosting recruitment efforts as the country grappled with teacher shortages; and launching a bus driver hiring campaign that received national and local coverage.

Yolanda Schufford, chief communications & public affairs officer at Beyond Finance, protects consumers by educating the public and influencing policymakers about debt issues. She was instrumental in helping stave off potentially restrictive legislation for North Carolina consumers in debt resolution programs and helped transform potentially harmful policies in California. In New York and New Jersey, Schufford was part of a team that introduced a model bill designed to initiate positive industry legislation.

Jill Zuckman, one of five partners at SKDK, has found herself in pivotal moments that have made global news. One of Zuckman’s standout achievements is her leadership in the media campaign to free Alan Gross, an American unjustly imprisoned in Cuba for over five years. Her efforts kept the media engaged, building public pressure that led to a historic announcement by President Obama, thawing relations between the U.S. and Cuba, which resulted in Gross’ freedom.

Dawn Buzynski, assistant vice president of communications at Hy-Vee, Inc., handles traditional communication duties, including overseeing Hy-Vee’s PR team, serving as its spokesperson, burnishing the company’s brand image, and devising its corporate messaging, but she also oversees the chain’s considerable CSR activities. Buzynski spearheaded Hy-Vee’s Homefront effort, which supports military members and their families and raised more than $475,000 to support veterans in 2022.

Rhiannon D’Angelo-Parsons, director of external communications & media engagement at Reynolds American Inc., is experienced as a media spokesperson and brand champion, directing marketing efforts and leading crisis communications and social media efforts. In her three years at Reynolds, D’Angelo-Parsons has demonstrated her original thinking and strategic prowess in navigating the complexities of the regulated and negatively perceived industry. Notably, she has communicated the company’s diversity and inclusion ambitions, achieving recognition for workplace inclusion while highlighting achievements across various platforms.

Nina Devlin, senior vice president and chief communications officer at Vertex Pharmaceuticals, guides medicines through development, trials and approvals in multiple global markets. Her mantra, “always stay hands-on,” means she’s intimately involved in building relationships with healthcare media and regulators. As a leader in a global company, she must maintain a vast network and knowledge base but also think strategically while operating in international markets.

Also, don’t forget to check out the profiles of all the Top Women in Communications, available after the event.

Do you know someone who should be honored as a Top Women in Communications? The call for entries for the 2025 class of Top Women in Communications Awards will be open soon. The deadline to enter is October 18, 2024.

Ragan is pleased to announce the 2024 Top Places to Work in Communications. This year’s class of inductees put employees first by ensuring their staff’s active involvement and motivation, advocating for increased diversity and equity in the workplace, presenting impactful narratives and creating a positive and supportive work environment.

Here’s a glimpse of what this year’s group has done to rise to the top:

  • Marathon Strategies set out to find out what a great workplace meant to employees at this small PR firm. Partnering with a consultancy, the company implemented key tactical initiatives: reinvestment in employee career development and skill training, embracing employee flexibility and time off, and providing financial and mental health resources.
  • The Kroger Co.’s Corporate Affairs team activated the organization’s Zero Hunger | Zero Waste (ZHZW) impact plan to create communities free of hunger and waste by expanding its seamless ecosystem, optimizing store-level execution of ZHZW programs, enabling technology to recover and redistribute more surplus food, and aligning charitable giving to feed more people.
  • In 2023, Cincinnati Children’s was named the No.1 pediatric health system. It believes in an integrated approach to its work, removing words like “internal” and “external” from the vernacular. Instead, the organization focuses on “Culture Communications,” reinforcing its effort to use proactive, intentional messages and images to educate, inspire and unite the organization, while its Culture Committee regularly plans social, educational and service activities and produces a regular e-newsletter.

A roundup of inspiring acceptance speeches and insights from the Top Women in Marketing Awards inaugural class.

Last year, Ragan and PR Daily launched the Top Women in Marketing Awards to honor and acknowledge the many accomplishments of trailblazing women marketers who continue to elevate the industry with their many successes. The support and encouragement in the room last October, as we celebrated these women, proved just why events like this are so powerful.

Sue Dietrich, marketing director at Stanley Brand and one of the marketing honorees, gave some advice to her younger self during the event:

“Say yes to opportunities that come to you. Say yes to life. Say yes to people, invite them into your world. And at the same time, don’t burn bridges. You never know, in this industry in particular, when those people are going to come back around.”

[RELATED: Do you know a Top Woman in Marketing? Are you one yourself? Nominate by March 15]

To continue honoring these accomplished women, we’ve rounded up a group of the most inspiring acceptance speeches from the awards. As honorees accepted their awards, they answered one of these questions:

  • What is the title of your autobiography?
  • What is the happiest moment in your life?
  • What is one thing you wish you could tell your younger self?

Take a look at these uplifting moments from the inaugural class of Top Women in Marketing and don’t forget to check out the profiles of all the Top Women honorees.

Do you know someone who should be honored as a Top Women in Marketing? The call for entries for the 2024 Top Women in Marketing Awards is open now. Deadline is March 15, 2024 to entry.

Vanessa Mbonu, vice president of Digital Marketing and Communications for the NAACP, is thankful for all the countless opportunities to succeed, fail and learn.

Beril Gutierrez, director of Social Media & Content at Discover The Palm Beaches, discusses the obstacles she has gotten through and what advice she’d give her younger self.

April Augustine, director of Marketing at “Gaming Laboratories International, reminds her younger self that she deserves to be in every room she’s invited to.

Aliah Davis-McHenry, executive Director of Global Corporate Marketing and Creative at Bristol Myers Squibb, explains the personal meaning behind her awards dress and why it propels her forward as a marketer.

Sue Dietrich, marketing director at Stanley Brand, tells her younger self to say “Yes.” (And no, she can’t get you that sold-out Stanley Cup.)

Sharifah Niles-Lane, SVP and head of Enterprise Social Media and Content Strategy at Citizens, titles her autobiography and shares its connection to her family.

Beautiful lessons to be learned.

Earning a PR Daily Top Women in Marketing Award takes years of hard work, creative thinking and glass ceiling busting.

When these remarkable women took the stage at the awards luncheon in October, we asked them a simple question:

What would you tell your younger self?

The honorees gave heartfelt, thoughtful answers as they reflected on the path that led them here, to the stage, spotlight and adulation of their peers.

“That which makes you weird makes you special,” said Tatiana Lyons, managing director of Klick Health.

“Perfectionism is really an illusion, so don’t play it safe.” Julie Hernandez, vice president, Gout Marketing for Horizon Therapeutics, offered.

“Takes chances on yourself. I’ve had such opportunities because I saw problems that I wanted to solve. I found the right advocates to help me and now I have a really great opportunity to share,” said Jamie Whalen, director of social media at Ivanti.

Watch the video for more insight from these inspirational professionals – and start preparing your own entry for the 2024 class of winners.

On Friday, hundreds of PR professionals gathered to celebrate the very best in the industry during the PR Daily and Media Relations Awards ceremony, held at the historic National Press Club in Washington, D.C.

“It does take a strategic PR plan and careful, creative and iterative execution to elevate a brand, an organization, an issue. Today’s honorees, all of you, prove that out,” Diane Schwartz, CEO of Ragan Communications, told the attendees.

Winners of the awards ranged the gamut from campaigns tackling the most pressing social issues of the day to playful, attention-grabbing campaigns with huge celebrities.

Joe Ruffolo, senior vice president and general manager for The Hill and NewsNation Digital, spoke of the common bond shared by both journalists and PR professionals: storytelling.

“It’s not just about telling a good story, it’s making sure that it has impact, that it continues to resonate, that it really amplifies,” Ruffolo said.

The winners shared stories of behind-the-scenes moments of their winning campaigns and initiatives, ranging from last-minute branded cookie runs to worries about cellphones being bugged by Russian operatives.

Congratulations to all the winners, honorable mentions and practitioners of the craft. See the full list of winners for the PR Daily Awards here and the Media Relations Awards here.

Honorees were celebrated at a special awards luncheon in New York City on October 26.

The 2023 Top Women in Marketing Awards celebrated the bold, innovative, visionary and exceptional women whose work on agency and brand campaigns leveraged content, data analytics and social media to drive inspiration, attention and results.

PR Daily hosted an awards luncheon on October 25th at New York City’s City Winery, where attendees gathered to celebrate their marketing strategies that amplified the efforts of their clients and organizations moving the profession forward.

“This year’s honorees demonstrate how marketers do so much more than sell on behalf of their brands and clients,” said Ragan CEO Diane Schwartz. “By elevating the position of the brands and products they work with, these women continue to push boundaries and capture attention with confidence and empathy.”

PR Daily congratulates this inspiring group of leaders.

Be inspired by the leadership of our inaugural honorees.

There are many accomplished women in the field of marketing. They demonstrate strong leadership skills and innovation, playing key roles in shaping marketing strategies and campaigns that achieved significant success. As more women shatter glass ceilings to reach executive positions, their careers have inspired others to follow in their footsteps. For all of their accomplishments and contributions, they should be celebrated.

Join PR Daily and your peers on Thursday, Oct. 26 as the red carpet is rolled out for the Top Women in Marketing Awards luncheon at the City Winery in New York City to celebrate the inaugural class of female marketing leaders.

“This event recognizes all of the hard work that marketers are doing for their organizations and clients to get their message and brand out there,” said Brendan Gannon, senior marketing manager of Ragan and PR Daily’s awards programs. “These awards are a well-deserved opportunity to network, learn and celebrate the great work of these honorees.”

Some of the notable individuals recognized this year include:

Abbie Griffith, U.S. head of operations, health at Edelman — Griffith’s tenure at Edelman started in 2005, when she moved to New York City with two suitcases and big dreams. Today Griffith is managing director and the head of U.S. operations for Edelman’s Health, pioneering Black female leadership for the sector and helping people across the agency fulfill their own dreams.

Angelina Franco, director of brand communications U.S. and global moments at Mars Wrigley — Franco’s strategic prowess and adept navigation of the evolving communications landscape have firmly established Mars Wrigley’s brands as culturally significant and socially impactful. One of Angelina’s notable achievements was her role in transforming Skittles’ Pride campaign. Skittles, known for its commitment to the LGBTQIA+ community, turned its packs grayscale as a symbol of solidarity with the community’s rainbow emblem.

Stefanie Zambelli, director of marketing at Applebee’s Grill + Bar — Zambelli wears many hats. Her day-to-day work includes leading marketing efforts for brand campaigns, defining strategy for the brand marketing calendar, working across Applebee’s cross-functional teams, partnering with field marketing teams and more. Zambelli’s notable campaigns in 2022 included the “Top Gun: Maverick” program, in partnership with Paramount Studios and Fandango, that allowed guests to redeem free movie tickets when dining at Applebee’s.

Sharifah Niles-Lane, SVP, head of enterprise social media and content strategy at Citizens — A trailblazer, Niles-Lane foresight has been instrumental in shaping Citizens’ digital strategies. Her advocacy of emerging channels like TikTok, her orchestration of social media activations for immersive experiences, and her leadership in venturing into the metaverse have propelled Citizens into uncharted territories, demonstrating her capacity to anticipate and capitalize on trends.

Come celebrate these women and more. Register now!

We hope to see you there. And make sure to check out our other award programs regularly and bookmark PRDaily.com/awards.

Winners will be revealed on Dec. 15 at the National Press Club in D.C.

In a year marked by challenges and rapid shifts in the communications landscape, PR professionals have demonstrated resilience, creativity and unwavering dedication to their craft. Finalists in Ragan’s PR Daily Awards have risen to the occasion, leveraging their expertise to ensure their work and that of their clients got the attention it deserved.

PR professionals have had to rethink every aspect of their work, from media relations to stakeholder engagement. Their dedication to finding innovative solutions, harnessing the power of technology, and maintaining a steadfast commitment to ethical practices has helped their clients weather the storm. Ragan’s PR Daily Awards recognizes these PR professionals, marketers, agencies, brands and campaigns of the past year.

All of these finalists will be celebrated at the upcoming Ragan’s PR Daily Awards ceremony, held in December at the National Press Club in D.C., where the leaders and trailblazers who have shaped the future of public relations will be honored, and category winners will be announced.

Congratulations to all the finalists for their remarkable achievements.

You won’t want to miss this event because the FOMO is real.

Entering PR Daily’s award programs is just the first step. The second step is celebration.

Join us June 14 from 12–2:30 p.m. EST at the Yale Club in New York City for lunch and an awards ceremony where we will recognize all finalists in PR Daily’s Social Media & Digital Awards plus Top Agencies and Campaigns. That’s like two events in one.

“PR Daily’s Social Media & Digital Awards recognizes the campaigns, content, people and teams that excelled in earning audience attention and turning that engagement into successful results for their organizations or clients,” said Brendan Gannon, senior marketing manager of Ragan and PR Daily’s awards programs. “The Top Agencies Awards honor the top firms and campaigns that over-delivered on their promises to clients and raised the bar on effective communications strategies and tactics.”

At this year’s awards luncheon, you’ll be among the best and brightest in the business including Walgreens Boots Alliance, John Hopkins and AAA, plus agencies like MikeWorldWide, Ruder Finn, Racepoint Global and The Brand Agency. You’ll also be entertained by Augie Bello, who has recorded with multiple artists, including Teddy Swims and Darren Criss and appeared as a guest on “The Drew Barrymore Show.”

“Our awards events are can’t-miss celebrations, recognizing all of the hard work that communicators are doing for their organizations and clients,” said Gannon. “They are a well-deserved opportunity to network, dine and celebrate with colleagues and peers.”

Come celebrate these teams and all their great work. Register now!

We hope to see you there, but there are other awards on the horizon you should be a part of. Make sure to check in on our programs regularly and bookmark PRDaily.com/awards.

Naming the singer “Suicide Prevention Advocate of the Year” propelled media coverage to the heights, making The Trevor Project a winner in the Brand Awareness category of PR Daily’s Social Media & Digital Awards.

According to research by The Trevor Project, 42% of LGBTQ youth — 1.8 million people — seriously consider suicide each year in the United States. The Trevor Project’s research also shows that celebrities who identify as LGBTQ have a positive influence on LGBTQ youth, with 80% saying these celebrities affected how they feel about being LGBTQ.

With this in mind, The Trevor Project selected singer Lil Nas X, an openly out celebrity with 19.8 million followers on Instagram and Twitter, as the inaugural honoree of its new “Suicide Prevention Advocate of the Year” award—a celebrity who could speak out during National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month in September 2021 to LGBTQ youth about the challenges they shared.

The Trevor Project’s communications team compiled a list of more than 250 media targets at more than 100 outlets across music and entertainment, mainstream news and culture, health and wellness, LGBTQ coverage, and more, hoping to ensure the highest amount of media coverage.

The Trevor Project also echoed the announcement on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn, all while working with Lil Nas X’s team to draft commentary about the meaning of the award to the singer.

The Trevor Project strategized with Lil Nas X’s PR team to coordinate the timing for the award with the rollout campaign for the singer’s album, set for release on Sept. 17. In addition, the Trevor Project’s marketing team created original visual graphics to promote the award across social media, email campaigns, website banners and more using exclusive imagery provided by Lil Nas X’s team.

The award announcement ran from Aug. 31–Sept. 1, 2021. During that time, The Trevor Project’s pitching efforts produced more than 35 pieces of unique coverage, including stories in the Associated Press, BET, Forbes, Gay Times and more. The campaign reached more 185.5 million unique monthly visitors in top tier publications like ABC News, Bloomberg, U.S. News & World Report, The Washington Post and more.

In total, The Trevor Project generated more than 570 million media impressions, with an estimated publicity value of over $523,000. On social media The Trevor Project team earned more than 2.97 million social impressions, 71,000 engagements, and over 7,000 clicks to The Trevor Project website. The Trevor Project also acquired more than 3,000 new followers across Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn.

Congratulations to the team of Sam Gold, Marissa Cohnen, Kevin Wong, Amit Paley and Josh Weaver.

Dotted Line built a digital content strategy to generate awareness of its clients during the pandemic. It’s a winner in the Blog and Marketing Campaign categories of PR Daily’s Social Media & Digital Awards.

In 2021, Worksite Labs reached out to Dotted Line to increase its visibility and awareness by building marketing strategies for its FDA-approved PCR diagnostic testing.

Worksite Labs and Dotted Line gave more than 500,000 Americans the ability to book COVID-19 testing easily as requirements changed often and access to traditional testing labs was a nationwide problem.

Dotted Line focused on building a digital content strategy to generate awareness, demonstrate thought leadership and engage with people. Using websites, blogs, social platforms and digital advertising, it sought to consistently tie content back to Worksite Labs’ consumer-first mission of fast, accurate and convenient COVID testing.

Dotted Line and Worksite Labs delivered frequent, tailored messages to targeted customers on LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, along with digital advertising on social channels and related apps, plus blogs providing thought leadership on testing and other COVID-19 topics and email campaigns to deepen relationships with customers.

The team also developed an Instagram contest to boost engagement, offering enough free airline miles for two round-trip tickets to Hawaii. The marketing efforts were supplemented with a media relations strategy that drove visitors to the Worksite Labs website, which is constantly updated with information such as a tool for getting the latest travel requirements.

From May through December 2021, total impressions across all platforms increased by 37%. Email open rates increased by 1,245%, organic social media impressions increased by 2,122%, and Worksite Labs’ website traffic increased 1,630%.

Congratulations to the teams at both Worksite Labs and Dotted Line.

It’s a winner in the “Annual Report” category of PR Daily’s Social Media & Digital Awards.

The lead article of UC Davis Children’s Hospital’s 2019-2020 digital annual report told a compelling story — a large multidisciplinary team from more than 30 pediatric subspecialties successfully separated nine-month-old conjoined twins. The two girls were born fused at the head, a condition that occurs approximately only once every 2.5 million births. Once they were separated, they were able to look at each for the first time.

The goal of the annual report, launched in February 2021, was to support the hospital’s reputation for specialty care and drive an increase in pediatric specialty referrals. The strategy centered around showcasing personal stories and highlighting UC Davis specialists when they were the first or only doctors to perform newsworthy and innovative research or treatments.

The public information officer identified and interviewed patients and families who had experienced lifesaving care; the writer compiled short articles for the report and collaborated with the public information officer to tell patient care stories and describe photos captured by the photographer.

The project had an additional challenge: building out the report website in-house instead of using a third-party vendor. The idea was to manage the process from start to finish, ensuring that the team was intimately familiar with the content.

The timeline was strict. To launch by early February 2021, the content had to be ready to go by the end of December 2020 so that it could be quickly implemented over the next 4 weeks.

To build out the website, an in-house digital team designed a template to showcase UC Davis’s signature publications. The team customized the template for the annual report, using a modern design to emphasize the copy and photographs. They had to make the template consistent with UC Davis’s overall brand style and also provide easy access to physician referral information via the navigation bar.

Once the report was launched, the marketing team shared it on internal communications channels and newsletters. On external channels, the report was targeted to reach referring physicians across the nation via a letter from UC Davis Children’s Hospital pediatrician in chief, who shared news about the twins’ separation along with a link to the full annual report.

The annual report helped drive a 20% increase in referrals to pediatric specialists.

Kudos to the team of Tricia Tomiyoshi, Michele Taber, Jennifer Jacobs, Emily Lilyla, Barbara Henelly, Brittany Collins, Cesar Cervantes and Davor Miksic.

With $0 media spend, the #DogeCan campaign generated 2 billion impressions.

The iconic men’s grooming brand AXE set out to refresh its image. The brand, which was founded in 1983, was still presenting outdated messages about masculinity. Its messaging wasn’t in sync with the Gen Z consumers it aimed to capture.

Through research, it defined its Gen Z audience as “MemeBros,” or “super online dudes” whose kooky humor often crosses over into mainstream culture. Creating a genuine rapport about AXE was integral to the agency’s mission. It was quick to slide AXE into real conversations and communities that resonated with its audience. Among them were music outlet XXL and RapTV, as well as gaming organization FaZe Clan.

The goal was to have AXE sound like a friend chiming in on a group chat. Its voice aimed to simulate how “MemeBros” would engage on Twitter and Instagram. Since Gen Z digs cryptocurrency like Dogecoin and smoking weed, The Martin Agency built a campaign around those themes.

The agency learned that #DogeArmy was using the marijuana-centric holiday 4/20 to lift Dogecoin above $1. AXE entered the conversation by tweeting an image of a limited-edition AXE can with the Doge rocketing to the moon and the text: “If it gets to $1, we’ll make it happen.”  Engaged users responded by creating the rallying cry, “You can’t, but #DogeCan.”

The campaign’s success is measured by:

  • The tweet, which captured 13K new followers
  • #DogeCan’s trending status on Twitter
  • 1,000+ limited-edition cans, which sold out in under one minute
  • The spray meme and NFT
  • Dogecoin’s +19% jump on release day
  • AXE’s social following’s 10% jump — the largest bump AXE had seen since 2016

For its skyrocketing success, the agency was named a winner in the Twitter category of PR Daily’s Social Media & Digital Awards.

Congratulations to The Martin Agency team of Danny Robinson, Ashley Marshall, Mik Manulik, Adam Goffstein, Lex Cabrera, Natalie Meyer, Gabe Davis, Drew Corrigan-Nunez, Gillian Merrill, Samad Hussain, Sharon Panelo, Stuart Hayhurst, Taylor Wiegert, Matt Kessler and Keith Gordon.

Kudos also go to the SuperJoy team: Matt Swieca, Ken Macy, Patrick Mack, McKay Bolden and David Freeman.

When Disney Parks set out to capture Gen Z, it turned to TikTok to showcase the magic by sharing its uniquely Disney stories in an unexpected, authentic way.

The Disney Parks team created more than 500 TikToks, which spotlighted heartfelt stories from cast members. The platform was also used to share exclusive behind-the-scenes content; information on new food, beverage, and product offerings; and special events such as park re-openings and celebrations. New park attractions/lands and relevant platform trends were also featured.

The team used eight Live Events to generate buzz. It included attraction ride-throughs with behind-the-scenes details from Walt Disney Imagineering, after-hours exclusive tours and holiday and celebration events such as parades, fireworks displays and performances.

By year end, @disneyparks’ TikTok growth made it the fastest growing, most engaged @disneyparks handle in 2021. Significant moments were highlighted through 123 TikToks, which went viral with organic video views in the 1-25 million range. Engagement rates were 3 to 6 times higher than other social media. TikTok was also quick to celebrate Disney’s magic. It included Disney in its “Year on TikTok 2021” recap and named it a “Brand that Acts like Creators.”

Disney Parks’ social media captured the interest of a new generation of people. It used live events and video to address this audience who spends a lot of time browsing TikTok and garnered more than 541 million video views, 4 million followers, and over 86.7 million likes. For its efforts, it was named winner of the Tik Tok category of PR Daily’s Social Media & Digital Awards. Congratulations!

Klick Health is helping parents, educators, and healthcare providers with early diagnosis of color vision deficiency in children via a fun, free storybook.

Early diagnosis of Color Vision Deficiency (CVD) is crucial since color is widely used as a learning and development tool. Color blindness, a highly undiagnosed, genetic condition, affects 1 in 12 males and 1 in 200 females, globally. People with CVD can see color, but they can’t distinguish between shades.

Klick Health teamed up with the Children’s Eye Foundation (CEF) of AAPOS to get kids on board for early screenings. They created “The Curious Eye”— a free, downloadable storybook that helps with early diagnosis and offers resources for support. The book is available at thecuriouseye.org.

“The Curious Eye” drew inspiration from the standardized color test. Rather than using multicolored dots shaped as numbers, a spectrum of colored dots form cute creatures. Kids are asked to distinguish one color from another to identify images of birds, insects, and other animals. An answer key assists adults in determining if a consultation is necessary. The book offers direct links to CEF’s ophthalmologist referral service.

The book’s launch was planned to coincide with National Institute of Health’s (NIH) Healthy Vision Month in May. Press coverage appeared in The Wall Street Journal, Medscape, Global News TV in Toronto, The Daily Mail in the UK, Verywell Family and various trade publications.

Klick’s team leveraged the book’s appeal as an interactive CVD storybook, built on CEF’s leadership, and tapped the reach of the book’s creators. The campaign led to a 13,944% boost in interactions across CEF’s social channels and an 1,065% uptick in website visitors. The marketing agency’s campaign earned more than 67 million press impressions globally.

Hundreds of hardcopies of the book were distributed to pediatric ophthalmologists nationwide. A literary agent is working to get the book on store shelves worldwide. Requests for multilingual translations poured in from countries around the globe.

For Klick’s achievements, it was named a winner in the Specialty Campaign category of PR Daily’s Social Media & Digital Awards.

Credit goes to the Klick Health team: Sheryl Steinberg, Anne Vranic, Marisa Mcwilliams, Rich Levy, Michael Bonilla, Kate Maldjian, Kristine Brown, Laura Denham, Hollie Phipps, Kelly Gray, Chris Newcomb and Gavin Buckland. Kudos also go to illustrator Ruby Wang.

Hallmark used the power of social media to gain visibility and drive engagements through a sweepstakes contest that promoted a special two-part movie event.

Every year, millions of viewers tune in to watch Hallmark’s festive, feel-good movies. Hallmark actors and sister team Ashley Williams and Kimberly Williams-Paisley produced and co-starred in “Sister Swap: A Hometown Holiday” and “Sister Swap: Christmas in the City,” a special two-part event.

Crown Media Family Networks’ social media team harnessed the power of social media to put fans front and center. The team hosted Zoom Watch Party events for each movie, cleverly using one event to promote the other. Fans were encouraged to enter a sweepstakes for a coveted opportunity to win a Watch Party in which they could invite three friends to join them (virtually) for the premiere. The contests were available on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

Hallmark was sure to deliver a signature ending. During the first premiere, Ashley, Kimberly, and fellow actor Anna Holbrook surprised the winners with a special drop-in visit. The Williams sisters chatted about why they created the holiday movies, asked about the fans’ favorite parts and played games with their star-struck fans.

Each premiere event included trivia games and a living room scavenger hunt. To get into the spirit, fans donned their favorite Hallmark Channel gear. Festive, custom Zoom backgrounds were tailored to each movie.

After the first premiere, the moment of surprise was shared across social media. Beyond generating buzz, it sparked more sweepstakes entries. For the next premiere, the sister duo brought in Hallmark Channel stars Nikki DeLoach, Autumn Reeser and Brooke D’Orsay for the surprise drop-in. Engaging events such as these help Hallmark deliver on the promise of this 100-year-old brand.

In a span of three weeks, the team nabbed 1 million impressions, garnered 32,000 engagements, and prompted 1,700 sweepstakes entries. For its efforts, it was named a winner in the Social Media Campaign category of PR Daily’s Social Media & Digital Awards.
